Ancona Nursery Home in Sandown I.O.W
« on: Saturday 15 October 16 05:23 BST (UK) »
John   Wallace Patient Single   Male   - (surgical patient) age 4 born 1907 Brighton England
My father, John Wallis (aka John Ernest Wallis / born Ernest Mynors-Wallis 1907) spent about a year in hospital lying on a flat board with a broken hip. I believe this happened whilst staying with relatives in the Isle of Wight. A member of the I.O.W. family history society pointed out this 1911 census entry to me which certainly tallies with what we know. Has anyone come across any records or photographs or other information of the ANCONA NURSERY HOME IN SANDOWN I.O.W. ? thanks.

Have you attempted to work out which house it might be from that 1911 census - by looking at the names of houses (or any numbers) on either side of it as some of them appear to be still there?

Is this the right area?

We cannot post information from the 1911, but if you could tell us the names of houses on both sides.....

I don't have a street number and it looks as if Victoria Road just had house names in 1911 such as Verona, Roma, Ancona, Sorrento.

I think one of the place names very close to Ancona was Bernay.  There is still a Bernay on modern google maps, run as a guest house.

That old map does not show many houses, so Ancona may be similar in style to Bernay, and close to it.

In 1911 it appears to be next door to Verona and Liittledene, Victoria Road. if you search google Street there is a house named Verona nearer the top of the street than bottom.
Littledene appears to be number 30 if you google it.

Bernay is No 24 on the link that I gave, and Littledene is No 30 as you move along Victoria Road.
