Rafaels of Devon
« on: Saturday 15 October 16 12:16 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Is anyone familiar with Rafael families in Devon? I have Joan Rafael born 1748 in Hemyock to John and Ann (she also has a sister, Elizabeth, born 1752). Obviously this is an unusual name for Devon, and I often find other Rafaels spelt Raffles, Raffil, Raphel etc (my ancestor Joan's surname is spelt Radfield in one marriage record)

I cannot find any more information on Rafaels in Hemyock, but have found a family in Culmstock around the 1680s. Does anyone have information on the origin of this family?

Many thanks
Samuel

The 1752 baptism for Elizabeth states that the parents were from Wellington. The surname RALPH seems more prevalent in Wellington. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Wellington/Transcripts
In 1748 the surname was spelled RAFAEL and in 1752 RAPHAEL. RAFAREL was fairly common in Devon as was RAPHAEL.
There is an inheritance dispute in 1704 RAPHAEL v CONANT.
There are RAPHAELS in Uffculme, Kentisbeare, Seaton & Bear.
Squance, Lillicrap, Dankester, Surtees, Yates
