Playle and US Civil War
« on: Sunday 16 October 16 02:12 BST (UK) »
I have found 3 Playles that served for the Union. William T. Playle (22nd Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps); Francis M. Playle (33rd Iowa Infantry- died May 23, 1864, Princeton, Dallas County, Arkansas); and William H. Playle (42nd Regiment, Missouri Infantry).
How do I find out when a Playle or Playles first stepped on a boat to emigrate to the USA? :)

At FamilySearch there are a few passenger prior to 1862 available for New York and other east coast ports [e.g., Boston and Philadelphia].  Keep in mind that the early lists are very incomplete and have little information on the age, occupation, origin or destination of the passengers.

Here are some Playles arriving in New York:

Not sure 100% that it's the same person, but Francis M Playel born 1840 in Indiana was the son of Mary Playel b. 1805 in Kentucky.
(According to the 1860 census for Mahaska, Iowa).  The father/Mary's husband isn't with them.
The original document is on FamilySearch.

By checking U.S. census records (www.familysearch.org (free) is probably the best place to start) you can look at birthplaces (and some census also record parents' place of birth) which might help determine when a particular family might have arrived in the U.S.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
