Looking for more about Robert Chiddy
« on: Monday 17 October 16 19:01 BST (UK) »
I have found this on FindMyPast:
"ROBERT CHIDDY
Birth year   1835
Death year   1860
Burial day   3 Burial month   Oct Burial year   1860
Age   25
Residence   Heldre
Place   BUTTINGTON
County   Montgomeryshire
Notes   Railway lab'r killed on line"

He may be the brother of John Chiddy, local Hanham hero famed for being killed 1876 clearing a boulder from a railway line.  A collection in John's honour raised enough money to build his widow a house.

The age is right for Robert, he is on the 1841 and 1851 census returns then disappears

I can't see any reference to the accident in online newspaper records, and as his death was before the 1861 census, nothing to confirm it is him.  The GRO may have got his name wrong - Robert Childer.

Are there any local records about this accident  ???  An inquest  ???  ???

Hi

Welsh Newspapers online have quite a few reports:

http://newspapers.library.wales/

Select the year by moving the bars and do a search for Chiddy.

I've had a good look with both names but nothing coming up on any of the sites. Inquest reports at that time are rarely available apart from as newspaper reports - I have a few ancestors' accidental deaths  in the Denbighshire/Shropshire area around that time and I have only ever found their inquest reports in newspapers.

Maybe someone else might find something.

I haven't been able to find anything about Robert online  :'(

In vain hope, I've got the death certificate for Robert Childer (sic), I'm sure it should read Robert Chiddy.  Anyway the certificate details the coroner for Montgomeryshire R D (Robert Devereux) Harrison, and inquest held on 2 October 1860 into Robert's death on the previous day.  It simply lists accidental death.

Any ideas how to get more details of the inquest  ???

It's very early for this. I was able to get some newpaper reports (Oswestry Advertizer - now Shropshire Star)  of inquests of my border county ancestors from the  Local Studies section of Oswestry Library but I think that Shropshire Archives do that now.- https://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives/

Powys  do have a records/archives section.  You could try

Sorry - just looked at the dates again - these are quite a few years apart - have you made a typo?

Yes, Gadget, slip of the finger  :P

The inquest was on 2 October 1860

There is a white church at Buttington, and a railway nearby.  I'm assuming that is where Robert died and is buried.  Unlikely to be a headstone - he was a long way from home and would not have his family or any money put aside.

I've put in a request for research at Powys Record Office to see if that can link him back to his father John Chiddy (snr) and Elizabeth
