Statutory registration started in Jul 1837, so there are no certificates available before then; before that you are reliant on parish records which varied in information recorded. As I understand it, registration only became compulsory in 1876.
Banns needed to be read 3 times before a marriage could take place [in parishes of both bride & groom] and finding the banns is not proof of a marriage taking place.
