Wedding Cert for JJH Lingard and Mary Eliz Tate

Hi, I can only find the marriage Banns of the following wedding...

John James Hood Lingard to Mary Elizabeth Tate, 20th Oct 1822. St James, Clerkenwell.

Is there anyway I can find the actual marriage certificate? Or if there even is one for this wedding? The Banns themselves are not as helpful as I would have liked.

Statutory registration started in Jul 1837, so there are no certificates available before then; before that you are reliant on parish records which varied in information recorded. As I understand it, registration only became compulsory in 1876.

Banns needed to be read 3 times before a marriage could take place [in parishes of both bride & groom] and finding the banns is not proof of a marriage taking place.

ADDED: have found the marriage on Pallot's index, so the marriage DID take place.

LATER: Parish register image of 2nd marriage in 1848 to Mary Ann Jones available in ancestry:
John widower full age gentleman of Cumming St father John James Hood Lingard farmer
And the image of the 1822 marriage of John to Mary Elizabeth Tate states it is by licence - NOT banns  ???

Thanks for the reply Josey. Yes, he married 3 times in total, he wasn't really a farmer in the truest sense of the word, Love green farm was somewhere he retreated to while he fought to clear his name after he was court marshaled and thrown out of the navy. I could go on and on, I'm afraid I am a bit of a nerd on the subject of JJH Lingard.
