Ellen (or Nellie) Burke

Ellen Atkin married Arthur Burke in 1913 at Scarborough. I believe she was born Ellen or Nellie Wilkinson in Lancashire in 1890 and was "adopted" by James Atkin. The earliest record of her I can find is in 1901 at York at a school at '41 Mount'. My question is what sort of school has two employed principals, two Governess',a trainee Governess and three servants to cater for only eight pupils? It could have been Easter Holidays, possibly. As the pupils are mainly 16 - 18 (Nellie is only 11) was it some sort of Finishing school?
Her husband served in WW1 in the RNVR from 1914 to 1920, for which he has a medal. However, though I have had great success in the past in tracing Service Records, I cannot find his. He served under the name Arthur Taylor Burke and his number was: MerseyZ/1165. Can anyone offer any advice on where his record might be?

The census only records those people who were at the address overnight?
Maybe there were more Day Pupils?

Please remember that some two-thirds of all WW1 Service Records were destroyed/damaged in a WW2 bombing raid.

The guide refers you to ADM 337(even provides a form that can lead to a digital download).Input to this form does not yield a record.However the record found through "Discovery" is in ADM 339 for some reason.

On the marriage certificate to Arthur Burke how old is she and who does she name as her father?

41 Mount could well be The Mount School, a Quaker Girl's School.

Arthur Taylor Burke with the service number Z/1165 served in the Royal Naval Divison which I believe was an Infantry Division in WW1. The index on Ancestry gives his date of birth as 9 March 1890. His service record is downloadable from the National Archives for a small fee or they are available on the Find My Past website. That site is available in many public libraries in the UK or you could purchase a few credits or take out a free trial.

If that is the correct birth date for your man you could look for him on the 1939 National Identity Register also on Find My Past and providing he and Ellen were still alive in 1939 get her date of birth.

Is there a reason why you think Ellen was not born Atkin? The reason I ask is that there is an Ellen Atkin age 1 born Blackburn living with parents James and Margaret in Blackburn in 1891. She is missing from the family group in 1901 so could be the one boarding at the school. The family are mistranscribed as  Artthen on Ancestry in 1901.

Well census night is the week before easter that year so the idea of easter holidays seems plausible

BTW I have an ancestor named in the census as Nellie - she's registered as Mary Ellen (and marries as such) - so don't discard those with middle names as Ellen or Nellie
