Looking for Tanners in Bury St Edmunds
« on: Wednesday 19 October 16 12:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to trace my family tree and I have been doing ok so far but I am completely stumped by my grandfather.

He was born in 1916 (i think) so no trace of him and his family on the 1911 census. On the 1939 census he was in the army and single. He married my grandmother in 1942.

I have applied for his birth certificate but it has not come through yet.

The only birth registration I can find of a Cyril Tanner is in Bury St Edmunds in 1916, mothers maiden name listed as Tanner - which implies she was unmarried?

I found his marriage certificate and on that it lists his father as Charles Tanner, Carpenter but the witness signature is W.C.Tanner which implies it was not his father who witnessed the marriage???

I m very confused by this. Can anyone give me any advice on how to trace who his parents were?

Thanks very much for your help!

Hi

Welcome to rootschat

It is not unusual for a fathers name to be made up at the time of marriage to cover illegitimacy.  Who did he marry in 1942.  Where and when did he die

I have a copy of his marriage certificate.

I am thinking that W.C Tanner may have been his brother as my dad talks of having an Uncle Bill - short for William maybe?

I am a little confused by the fact that he had a brother of the same name, do you think they would both have made up the father  for his marriage certificate?

Anyone can witness a marriage. WC Tanner may be a brother, cousin, uncle, sister, aunt etc etc .....

Are you sure that the Cyril Tanner whose birth was registered in Bury St E is your Cyril? There are others born elsewhere around the same time.

Hi Ruskie,

No I am not, but the only Cyril Tanner I could find was registered with mother Tanner so implies she was unmarried, in 1916 in Bury St Edmunds.

It seemed as though it might be likely she was an unmarried mother so perhaps in a home such as
this?

You may be right, but if he said his father was Charles on his marriage certificate, then it is worth seeing if you can find a family with a father Charles. Yes, he may have been fibbing.  ;)

Did the family originate in Bury St E do you know?

How old was Cyril when he married?
What was his occupation?
What was his father's occupation?
What was his address?
