Just coming in on this, I only found the 1850 birth which has since been ruled out, I can understand him being in Goole (Allegedly) as the name is common in the Goole area, my Great Great Grandmother on my mothers side was Mary Moody from Goole, She married William Denby.I cant find your Thomas in my lot tho'  :-\

There is a baptism record (transcript only) as follows:

25 Dec 1857, Goole Snaith Chapels
Moody, Son, B 30 Nov 1857
Father : William, a Joiner
Mother: Sarah Markhamsamuel
Residence: Goole

Mothers surname clearly looks odd, so looked a little further and found this marriage:

21 May 1856 Winterton, Lincolnshire
William Moody of Full Age, Bachelor, Joiner of Goole, York.  Father: John Moody, Farmer
Sarah Markham of Full Age, Spinster of Winterton.  Father Samuel Markham, Labourer
Wit: Samuel Markham, William Dent

I cant immediately see a baptism for Thomas Markham in 1855, but Freereg has plenty of Markham baptisms around that time, including an Edwin.

MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

There is definitely something odd with that first baptism giving the birth date as 30 Nov 1857, because there is also this:

24 Mar 1858, Alkborough, Lincolnshire.  Samuel s/o William & Sarah of Goole, Joiner.

And then this MI, also Alkborough:

10 Mar 1858 Sarah Moody aged 26, wife of William Moody of Goole.  (Burial date was 12 Mar).

By 1861 William is married to Elizabeth Abbey and they, plus Samuel, are living at 28, Victoria Street, Doncaster.  No sign of any earlier children.

This family could be a complete red herring but the middle name of Mark used in NZ could be a reference to Markham - although I can't find a civil registration birth under either surnames.  :-\

I seem to have stumbled on the 1861 census for the family Milliepede was looking at:

RG9/3530/38/9 - Transcribed as Meade on FindMyPast but clearly Moody - not coming up at all on ANC.

John Moody Head 39 Ag Lab b Selby
Elizabeth Moody 40 b Cowick
Thomas Moody 11 b Cowick
William Moody 9 b Cowick
Reuben Moody 6 b Cowick
Mark Turton Moody 4 b Cowick

It was this Mark who died in 1871, the other one possibly died Dec qtr 1851.

MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

Sorry to drop out of the conversation - I am in Japan so asleep while all the action was occurring. If Thomas is there in the 1901 census, doesn't that rule out this Cowick family? I can see the 1901 entry in Ancestry with him under Cowier (an obvious transcription error - the original is clearly Cowick). These Thomas Moodys seem quite distinctive - you can identify various of them clearly through the years, like the Yarm one, the Cowick one etc.  For a commonish kind of name I am pleasantly surprised.

Where does this mother's family name Markham one occur? I am struggling to find him. How many others can there possibly be eluding the records?
Smith: East Lothian, Scotland
Mack: Berwick, Scotland
Fell: Yorkshire, England
Smeeton: Leicester, England
Haigh: Marsden, Yorkshire, England
Sullivan: Kerry, Ireland

Can you please give more information from the 1876 marriage certificate. Does it give an occupation for Thomas, who are the witnesses, what church for the marriage.

Two birth certificates with father Thomas Mark MOODY - who is the informant for each......mother / father / other person ?.
