Henry Richards, the son of Rev. Edward and Mary (was Bridges).
« on: Thursday 20 October 16 18:14 BST (UK) »
Hi again.
Edward and Mary of Epsom had 6 sons. I have  traced and have details for 5 of them but one remains a mystery. Henry Richards, B1806, Epsom. I can't find anything about him at all but there is a Henry Richard of a similar age, born in Epsom and, in the 1851 census is show as married to an Elizabeth, B1803 and a child, Mary, B1850. Henry, like his brother Thomas, is shown as a surgeon. We last used Richard as a surname in 1675 but variants do pop up now and again. This Henry is shown as Richard in the 1861 census too so he may well be a red-herring.
Any info on the real Henry would be appreciated.
                                                 Regards.

Looks like he marries 1845 St Geo Hanover Sq to Elizabeth HAZELL.

The image seems to be available on FindMyPast. I'm between subs at the moment so can't help there.

 Many thanks to you both.
I thought that I was on the right track but it's good to have confirmation from a more expert source.
Elizabeth Hazell had a child from her first marriage, Emily Hazell and she is shown in the 1851 census as 'Grand-daughter'. Shown in the 1861 census is a son Harry T. with the same birthdate as Mary, (1850). I wonder why he isn't on the 1851 census.  Elizabeth is not shown in 1861 and may be deceased at this time.
Out of the 6 sons only 2 went to live in Wales ... both remained unmarried and one committed suicide!
                 Many thanks from Sweden.

Hi !

Alfred Bax noted the inscriptions in Epsom St Martin ca 1890.   If you contact me off list:

monumental_AT_wsfhs.org

I will send you a copy of the extract from his notebooks giving the inscriptions on the family tomb.

The images are copyright West Surrey Family History Society, Tony Kelly and Surrey Archaeological Society and are used with permission.

There is a little more about St Martins on the Churches of Surrey Index at:
http://www.surreygraveyards.org.uk/graveyards/epsomstm.shtml

however this is still "work in progress".

Regards

Hi Tony.
Thanks for that. I  have a photo of the grave of the Rev Edward and his wife Mary, plus 2 of their sons, Thomas Alexander Richards, Surgeon, 1813-1886 and the Rev. Edward Bridges Richards, 1804-1832, Curate of Ashtead, Surrey. He was buried in Lambeth. The grave in St. Martins is of the chest variety and the inscriptions are almost worn away. Feel free to send me a copy of any other inscriptions that my photo doesn't show.
Thank you for your interest.     Regards, Peter Richards.

 Hi Maureen.
Many thanks for those death-dates  for Henry's children.
Whilst trawling through the Internet I came across an item that relates to the Rev. William Steward Richards, the Vicar of Terwick, brother of Henry.
Item regarding Blanche.
[She was sorting out the archives at the Rogate Heritage Centre when she came upon the diary of William Parkinson which told how he met and fell in love with Blanche, the daughter of the rector of Terwick William Steward Richards in 1882 during a long summer visit to Rogate].

Read more at: http://www.midhurstandpetworth.co.uk/news/a-story-of-lost-love-discovered-in-rogate-after-130-years-1-7592985

(Blanche married someone else and died in childbirth).

Of interest too is the will of the Rev, Edward. His 8 surviving children (as well as property etc.), are all left an annuity of £1,500.
This is more than I was earning as an engineering apprentice in 1959 !

                                                          Regards, Peter.
