Girl Guide can you send me a web link?

He is listed on all the census information as Stanley J and the birth that seems to correspond is Stanley John.

He definately married a lady called Rose.

but he was not Stanley Albert ????????

Oooh getting a tad confused here.

Bear with me while I put information down that I have found.  First of all I located a schools admission record for a Stanley Compton.  Original image states entered school on 20 Nov. 1899 born 16 Dec. 1893, father Charles of Shrewton and Stanley left on 7 Jan. 1905 to do farm work.

1901 census has him living with parents Charles and Sarah and siblings at Shrewton Lodge Cottages, Shrewton, Amesbury, Wiltshire.  Place of birth is Holt.

1911 still with parents, milker on farm.

Both these census records just have Stanley no J.

1939 you have already found with Stanley J living at Winchester with Rose B.

There is another Stanley Compton (no second initial) born Jan. 1894, I'm pretty sure the original shows him to be a widower although the transcription says married.  Living in Lancashire.

The Stanley from the census records appears to have died in 1970 which I assume is the one from which you got the birth date.

I really think you will have to fork out some money and get the marriage certificate to see who is named as Stanley's father.

Do you know what Stanley was doing in the war years that might explain the marriage in Cambridge?

Is this marriage too late in Winchester - he married someone called Wren, but it is one of those annoying records where the bride is missing. Can anyone find it to see if she was Rose Wren?

Marriages Sep 1934
Compton    Stanley J    Wren
Winchester    2c   319

ADDED: Forget that, I've found her, she was Annie Wren

Wife's death recorded in 1969 in Winchester.  Gives dob as 28.9.1895

If you decide to order the marriage cert. just do so in Rose's name, don't mention Stanley.  You don't have to give both names when ordering marriage certs.  As there is confusion over his name best to leave him off the order form.
