Carnwath / Harkness family, Derry-Londonderry
« on: Friday 21 October 16 01:32 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am looking for information on the Carnwath family (my dad's side) and Harkness family (my mum's side). I have information on the Carnwath side going back to Andrew (b. 1836/36, d. 1900). He was my great-great grandfather - I don't know who he was married to, but his son, Hamilton (b. 1857) was my great grandfather. My grandfather was William James (b. 1898). My father was Edward Lynch (1927). As for the Harkness side, I have precious little information at present beyond my grandfather (James Harkness b. 1909). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Ronnie Carnwath

Harkness 1911 Census

1901

And it has his mother.

Hang on there should be James, they say 5 children but only 4 listed.

The following possibility doesn't fit with the reported age at death of Andrew Carnwath in 1900, but as that age could be inaccurate, I'm posting it just to note until you can rule it in or out.

I have seen a marriage on 19 October 1849 where the groom was transcribed as Andrew 'Cornwall' (father John Cornwall, a shoemaker) from Disertowen, Glendermott (Clondermot) who married Matilda Kelly of Curryfree, Glendermott (father Dennis Kelly, a labourer)  - the original marriage registration is available as 'pay to view' on GRONI online, though the 'irishgenealogy' website has undertaken to digitise it to view for free online in the foreseeable future. I can see one probable child to this couple post civil registration, an unnamed son born in 1864 in Ballougry, the father's surname is definitely Cornwath:

In addition, a Matilda Carnwath married a William McMorris in 1900, she was the eldest daughter of your Hamilton Carnwath and Margaret Glenn, so the naming convention potentially 'fits' back to Matilda Kelly:

Note this possibility, a David Harkness was born in 1871 to parents David Harkness (a farmer living in Teenaght) and Bell Smith:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1871/03274/2199802.pdf

I can see several other children.

Edited to add: David Harkness (senior) married Isabella Smith in 1859 (not digitised yet, but due to be):

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/8b82fe14701003

In the record I've seen, the marriage was on 13 December 1859 in Learmount Church of Ireland, David was from Teenaght, the son of a farmer transcribed as 'Montrey' Harkness, Isabella was from Straid, the daughter of Bartly Smith, a farmer (for a look at the original registration, GRONI online has it available on a 'pay to view' basis).
