No timescale given by you re: birth/marriages/deaths

An Elizabeth Gotham Tarr married a William Lawson in Exeter in 1849 but that is too far back for them to be your grandparents

Gotham is an unusual middle name - are you sure John Alfred married an Elizabeth Gotham Tarr as I can't find any other match to a marriage

Hi Carole yes you are right I am sorry  I meant to write my grandfather John Alfred Lawson born 1851 and my great grand parents William Lawson and Elizabeth Gotham Tarr.
My grandfather John Alfred Lawson married my grandmother Gertrude Alice Abbott but he married her under the name Paul Fountain in 1910

Rosa is the daughter from his 2nd marriage I am descended from his 3rd marriage to Gertrude

A John Alfred Lawson was born June qtr 1851 Melton Mowbray.  I see from another post that you live in NZ.  As I can't find John Alfred on any census - did they emigrate before 1861?

My grandfather passed away in England my grandmother emigrated with the children to NZ

Hi Trish yes that is what I am hoping will happen as I have just discovered who my real relatives are  Lawson / Tarr / Gotham.
After searching the incorrect name   (Fountain ) for years and getting nowhere I am hoping someone will have some photos etc they can share with me.

Elizabeth Lawson, 25, Wife, Mar, born Feigumeuth, Devon 
Henry G Lawson   1 Mo, Son, born Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire****

And 1861;
1861 in Milton, Kent;
Elizabeth G Lawson, 35. Mar, Custom House Officers Wife, born Teignmouth, Devon
John A Lawson, 10, Son, born Birmingham Winson Green


1871 William Lawson, age 31, Tailor, is in the Brrokwood Lunatic Asylum in Surrey

Hi Trish yes I found that about Henry G Lawson ( I assumed the G stands for Gotham) but Henry disappears after that and I can not find a birth cert for him but John Alfred Lawson seems to crop up from there on so I am wondering if he had a name change, MY grandfather John Alfred Lawson was born in Melton Mowbray not Birmingham. My great grandfather William Lawson was born in 1825 so in 1871 he would be 46 years old not 31 but he was a tailor.

Would you be able to tell me where you found the information in 1861 and also 1871 as I can't seem to find it. Is it from the census for those years? thanks Trish

Hi Carole Yes that is me but at that stage I didn't have the information I have now I was looking for the right person but the wrong name for years
 I have given the correct information to Karenlee who was also looking for my grandfather.
A whole generation lived and died without knowing their correct surname which is sad.
As I kept hitting a brick wall re Paul Fountain I made sure that I would unearthed the truth for my children's sake.
