Hartington or Hope?
« on: Sunday 23 October 16 16:07 BST (UK) »
The FS website has two baptisms for Michael Gould, both on the same day, 10 Oct 1791, with the same parents (Peter Featherstone and Mary Gould), but one in Hartington and one in Hope.   ???

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01iq8/

Does anyone have access to the actual PRs to see if it's possible to understand why it's listed for two separate parishes, please?

Thanks

It is most likely a transcription error --the two parishes are probably on the same microfilm and someone has not noticed the change of parish when transcribing the entries

As you have an exact date, you could try emailing the Derbyshire Record Office and ask them to confirm which is the correct entry.
Wainwright - Yorkshire
Whitney - Herefordshire
Watson -  Northamptonshire
Trant - Yorkshire
Helps - all
Needham - Derbyshire
Waterhouse - Derbyshire
Northing - all

Hum.  Interesting indeed, although I can't find James and Mary on the 1841 census in/around Hartington.

Michael called one of his sons Peter, and one of his grandsons was also a Peter, so it seems there was no ill-feeling that Mr Featherstone didn't marry Michael's mother.

Am helping a friend here, so think I'll pass it over to her to see what she makes of it all.

Thanks

Hi again, it is possible the Mary Gould who married James Machin in 1824 was again the illegitimate daughter of Mary Gould and Peter Featherstone of Heathcote baptised 7th May 1797 Hartington,  St Giles,  Featherstone family in 1841 Heathcote?

Do not know why FindMyPast has been down so long, possibly server/maintenance?  But from Ancestry in Birmingham 1851 is a Mary MACKIN 54 b Heathcote with a James 55 and Jane Gould 20
Census ref HO107/2058/231/11

PS Jane b Heathcote looks to be the daughter of Michael/Mary in 1841 Census?

EDIT A Michael Gould was buried 4th January 1826 Hartington aged 5 Father Michael Mother Mary

Mary is a Widow in 1851 Census so possible burial of Michael Gould 15th September 1847 Hartington aged 55

Oh, I've now got three Mary Goulds,

1 - b 1771: the unmarried mother of Michael
2 - b 1797: the illegitimate sister of Michael
and
3 - b 1800, Mary (nee Sutton) the wife of Michael

but I think I've worked out who's who.

No.1 died in 1861 in Hartington
No. 2 moved to Birmingham with her husband James Machin
and
No. 3 outlived Michael and died in 1878 in Hartington

Phew!

Thanks for all the help peeps
