Birth Record for Margaret Helen Sang of Anstruther Easter
« on: Sunday 23 October 16 17:55 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I am relatively new to genealogy and have recently hit a snag during my search for my great-great-grandmother, Margaret Helen(a) Mitton nee Sang, who was born in Scotland. The issue I am running into is that I cannot find a record of Margaret’s birth or death. If possible, I was just hoping for some guidance as to where I should look next, whether it be websites to look at or record collections to search :) I'll try to provide as much information as I can, while trying to avoid making this too long.

Here is the information I started with when I began my search on Margaret, from a notebook my grandfather (Margaret’s grandson left):
-   She was born in Scotland (perhaps in Leith)
-   She attended Dr. Bell’s School in Leith, Scotland
-   Her parents were Alexander and Alison Sang
-   Her siblings were:
o   Andrew
o   James
o   Robert
o   Elizabeth
o   Isabelle
o   Alison
-   She liked to be called Helen
-   She married Jasper Steel Mitton in New Brunswick, Canada and resided there until her death in a Halifax hospital (date unknown but sometime between 1914 and 1917 as Jasper remarried in 1917)

On FamilySearch I found her marriage certificate for her wedding to Jasper in New Brunswick, Canada (1907). Also listed are her parent’s names (Alexander Sang and Alison Greive Thompson), place of birth (Anstruther Easter), and age (22, so she was probably born around 1885/1886). I have also found her record of departure from Glasgow bound for Halifax (March 1907) and her arrival in Halifax (April 1907), but so far that’s it.

The 1881 England, Wales and Scotland Census lists all the names I have for Margaret’s siblings, and mother, who is listed as a widow (this is where I had doubts as to whether I was looking at the right family, otherwise this means Alexander can’t be Margaret’s father if she was born in 1885/86). I also began researching family trees on Ancestry, hoping to see Margaret pop up somewhere, but not once does she make an appearance. Other census and BMD websites bring up no results.

Any suggestions for what to try next would be much appreciated :)

Hi there and welcome to RootsChat  :)

The birth cert that JJ mentions should include the date and place of parents' marriage. Maybe this one in Leith? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY98-YT5

At least three children's births in Anstruther Easter:

Isabella 1866 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYRJ-HMZ
Alison 1872 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYRJ-CYD
Andrew 1874 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY1V-Q7X

Some of the registrations show as LANG such as:

Euphemia 1868 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQSP-YFN
Elizabeth 1870 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYRJ-H2Z

(mis)Transcription of the surname might explain why I couldn't see them in the census for 1891. From  1881:

Alison Sang 38 head Seamstress b. Dunbar, Haddington
James Sang 16 son sailor
Isabella Sang 14
Euphemia Sang 12
Elizabeth Sang 10
Alison Sang 8
Andrew Sang 6
James Reekie 37 boarder mason

Address: Back Of Shore Street, Anstruther Easter

The 1885 birth cert will hopefully make things clearer.

If you have Alexander as deceased by the 1881 census....Always a possibility that Margaret may have given the name of her Lang grandparents as her parents and her mother was one of the Lang early daughters.

Trying and failing to find Margaret so far in 1891.

Possibly Alison remarried in 1890. There is an entry on the SP index which shows:

Alison Sang Thomson married a John Bradley in 1890 in Leith North (ref
692/1 10).

You can compare her parents' names from the earlier marriage to verify it is a remarriage for her. She should also show as a widow on the cert..

Surnames seem a jumble still  :-\

I think this is Margaret in 1891:

Alison Bradley Lang 48 b. Dunbar
Andrew Lang 18 coal miner b. Anstruther
Robert Lang 9 b. Anstruther
Margaret Lang 5 b. Anstruther

Address: Fore Shore St, Buckhave, Wemyss Fife

Hi Monica - Thanks for your help!

I have a list of name discrepancies, Lang being one of them, but I guess I wasn't searching on the right site!

The one you just found seems to make sense. Margaret's mother Alison had a child (Robert) in 1881 (November sometime, after the census for that year was done, which is why he's not on it), but he never had the surname Sang/Lang. I assumed he had been born out of wedlock, but this is the first time Margaret's really coming up with any of her siblings :)
