As both Sandra and YT have suggested cars of the Armstrong Whitworth/Siddeley persuasion, it might be worth getting in touch with the Armstrong Siddeley owners club.  They would be able to confirm the make, and may have records of early cars (my Father in law has classic cars and is a member of a similar club, and frequently there are requests for info in their magazines) http://www.siddeley.org/

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I now have 2 irons in the fire. I have contacted the Gwent Archives  and also a long time engineering colleague who rebuilds vintage cars. T

Gwent Archives inform me that they have the relevant records under
reference C/LT/B/1. The original owner & car make would be shown.
Ebbw Vale unfortunately is some way from London but hopefully I will manage it sometime. T

I thought they might have been interested to have a copy of the photograph.
Also I have better use for the small fee of £25. T

Hi all.   I have come to this enquiry very late via other researches and can advise that AX is Monmouthshire, SE Wales, registration. Close detail study of the photograph suggests the registration is AX 244, not 24, so this is not a very early registration following their introduction. The car make has been suggested as Armstrong Whitworth, which is not the case. The car has a radiator that is reminiscent of the British Wolseley but is in fact a cca 1907 Darracq 10'12 Double Phaeton, originally French from Suresnes. Darracq became British and made cars in UK from 1905. So this could be a British made Darracq. Company went on to take over Clement Talbot in 1919 , and then merged with Sunbeam to form STD Ltd in 1920. After bankruptcy of STD the company was taken over by Rootes Group in 1935,  who in tern were taken over by the Chrysler Corporation, now Fiat Chrysler.
