Jeannie Deans
« on: Tuesday 25 October 16 21:02 BST (UK) »
A memorial stone has been found buried in a garden in Eckford, Scottish Borders, for 'Jeannie Deans wife of Jas. S. Rutherford' but no date. There are Rutherfords in the graveyard but no Deans, nor is there a Rutherford wife called Jean Deans. I've also looked in the 1851 census. I wondered if a marriage could be found? I expect the date would be 1800s. Any help would be most welcome.

Thankyou both for your help. There are James Rutherford deaths but always with other wives, not a Jean.

Jane Rutherford isn't on any grave in Eckford Cemetery and there is no Jane in the 1851 census.
Thankyou for looking.

Too late to be the Jeannie Deans of Scott's novel, or the paddle steamer named after her!

Skoosh.

This looks like Jean in 1841. Unfortunately not with parents.
Parish: Wilton; ED: 3; Page: 4; Line: 1190
Possible birth: Janet Deans b.05/10/1823 Hawick.
Parents: Robert Deans/Helen Rutherford.
Jean/Janet were interchangeable.
No marriage on SP.

Yes, I think so. Wilton is the big park in Hawick. It is also the home of the Heritage Hub where all the records are kept - I might have to have a trip over there! Thankyou for your help.
