It's possible James remarried to a Mary Wilson by mid 1850's as there are a number of children born in Hawick to them so it's possible he was living there when Jean/Janet died.
So you're looking for a Jean/Janet Deans/Rutherford 1845-55.
Have you ascertained where the plaque may have come from ?
Are there any derelict/demolished Churches/Chapels in the area that it may have been removed from ?

I've been told there was a man in the village who did stone carving as a hobby so I'm now looking into that. I've never known if it's possible to attach a photo here. Thankyou for helping me.

I've just realised it's not my photo so I'd better not. Thankyou anyway.

I think I might get a story about this in the local paper but i'll have to speak to the new owner of the cottage first. This area is full of Rutherfords - there must be relatives!
