Research on Deevy / Devoy of Kilmurry, Co. Laois.
« on: Wednesday 26 October 16 10:55 BST (UK) »
Researching family roots: Deevy/Deevey/ Devoy - of Kilmurry, Co. Laois

I'm looking for help regarding my family tree. On my grandfather's marriage cert. the surname is spelt in three different ways. My grandfather Edward's name is spelt Deveay. The name Deevy is written under marriage being solemnised by the couple, and Edward's father's name is down on the cert as Thomas Deevey. This marriage took place on 26th April, 1885 in St. Catherine's Church, Dublin.

I'm looking for information on my great grandfather, Thomas Deevey. Where was he born? Did he marry in Dublin or Laois? From the baptismal records in the Parish of Portlaoise, I have found a Thomas Devoy, son of William Devoy and Eliza Whelan from Kilmurry. Thomas was born in August, 1844.
I'm wondering if this Thomas Devoy is the same person as Thomas Deevey on my grandfather's marriage cert. I would like details on this Thomas' marriage, his wife's name and when and where was Edward (son on marriage cert) born.

Yours sincerely,
Jim.

You can use https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp to Search for them by just using Surname and then Select the Registry Office they would have used from list on left.
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

I'm confused, you have Edward's marriage in Dublin. What's the connection to Laois?
Have you got him in the 1901 or 1911 Census, where does he say he was born?

Have you got Edward's birth?
You have his father's name Thomas, what was his mother's name?

I still don't get it, sorry can you spell it out to me please, I still can't see what the connection to Laois is.

Is it his residence at time of marriage? Very had to read, I can't make it out. Clonske?

I can't find them in the census either.

Probably Clonskea, but that is where he was living when he married. From memory, they had to be at an address in a Parish for only 15 days prior to marrying, so means nothing!

That's why you'll see a hotel being mentioned on many!
