25 Carlton Road Eastbourne
« on: Thursday 27 October 16 13:14 BST (UK) »
I am researching 25 Carlton Road Eastbourne.  Does anyone have any old photos of this house, maybe they were brought up there.  It is a big white house on the corner of Latimer and Carlton.  Years ago it was called 'The Ferns'.  Any information would be gratefully received.

It's currently a B & B, if Google street view is current.

Well that is a little out of date.  My parents have actually lived there for the last 30 years, and yes it was a very small B&B years ago.

From a site for index of wills in U.K.:

GAUSDEN, The Ferns 25 Carlton-road -- Eastbourne, in 1932.

As you have family there what sort of information about the house are you looking for?

Just if anyone had any info really I know that the Allchorns lived there at one stage.  Photos would be good.  Stories, anything that might help me gain a picture of what it was like and the area.  I am compiling  a history for the family and thought I noticed someone on here was asking about Tower Place, which was just up the road so thought that maybe someone has any information that could help about Carlton Road.

Have you looked at the deeds of the house? I know the deeds for my parents house had when it was built and by whom, what it cost to build and then had all the owners and prices from then until my parents bought it.

Yes I do have the deeds which has given me some info, although they start at about 1933 and only some info on further back.  Where do I get more info on these would it be the land registry?  I have been given some info on who lived there.  But thought maybe some people on here may have had ancestors who actually lived in the house.

Have you found the address in the 1939 register, that would tell you who was living there then and their occupations?

In 1901 it looks like it was a family with the surname Lacey living at number 25.  Head of the family is Annie F Lacey, bn c. 1857 in Eastbourne.  I believe that they might well still be there in 1911, with George Gausden (who died there in 1932) living with them too.

Marriage for an Annie Florence Gausden to George Albert Lacey in St Pauls, Brixton in 1887.  Annie gives her address as 3 St Leonards Place, Eastbourne.  Her father is James Gausden, boat owner.
