I think it's worth looking at GenUKI to see what PR's survive and where?
While the site isn't infallible (it's run by volunteers, of course!), it's usually a good starting point.

Some counties list PR availability on each parish page; some at the county level.
Often you are directed towards the relevant Record Office or Archives.

Hi Ray,

my latest example is a will..

Knaresborough wills Jas Chippindale of west syke green, carpenter 12 oct 1726

i already have a thomas which im presuming is his father/brother who left a will the same year also of west syke green but its the first ive heard of Jas.

mostly 1700s it would seem
Jas  is usually an abbreviation for James.

the Jas.  info i got from a published book of knaresborough wills and the date is different.. and im not aware of any major gaps.

the will of thomas if i havent made any errors was 9 sep 1726. he was buried 10 dec.
Jas has 12 oct 1726 on his entry.

I'm not sure. What does this look like?  I thought perhaps the date was twelfth day of October (abbreviated). I always get confused between the Julian and Gregorian calendar dates.

The date here is 12 November 1726 - with November written 9ber. Novem is Latin for nine, and month names are sometimes abbreviated accordingly.

Maureen

you and me both! ive just moved the massive pile of paper on my desk and am currently looking where ive written november so where i got september from i do not know..

so double checked now!

the book that i found it in is
Wills & administrations from the Knaresborough court rolls
Jas.,West Syke Green, carp., Oct. 12, 1726; Eliz., Tho. C. V 52

the will I have of Thos 12th Nov 1726

the dates seem a bit of a coincidence dont they but should i really put it down to a transcription error? It seems perfectly readable??

...  I may one day get myself picked up for wandering around graveyards. if anyone passes one and sees a woman asking for directions from a headstone or saying is he yours? it wasnt me ::)

Taking this literally, I am wondering whether you have asked for a listing of the graves in those graveyards.  Some churches have catalogued their occupants, which can save time and frustration.
