What is a Rhal or Rahl ?
« on: Thursday 03 November 16 19:34 GMT (UK) »
Whilst researching my Family History I came accross a distant relative that lived in a workhouse, amongst his few belongings one of the things listed was a Rhal or Rahl - cannot remember the correct spelling as I looked this up ages ago. Just wondering if anyone has any idea what a Rhal / Rahl is or was. Not had any success finding out so far.

Thanks.

Did this come from a transcription? I suggest trying to obtain the original document that listed this item, and posting a snip of it here to see what others think it reads.

No, it came from a printed book. I'll try and find it again sometime as it was some years ago that I looked at  the book.

Could it possibly be a Welsh word?

If it has come from a book, there may have been multiple opportunities for mistranscriptions or errors to be made. Do you know the date of this list related to your ancestor? (Some words are no longer in use so I am wondering if this is one of them). It would probably help to know the context too.

So, yes, find the book to see (exactly) what the word is, and then try to find the original source of the information. If someone is quoting this word in a book, presumably they have found the information somewhere, so you should also be able to find it too. :)

It sounds like it could be a foreign currency, like from Saudi Arabia for instance
