Old Church in Cumberland, perhaps Workington area
« on: Thursday 03 November 16 21:54 GMT (UK) »
This is a postcard posted in Workington, Cumberland in 1905 and Addressed to Dearham, about six miles away. I have visited every church in West Cumberland and taken 20,000 plus photos and it certainly does not exist today....unless, of course, anyone knows better.

Is the only clue it is in Cumberland the fact the postcard was posted from there?

Don't suppose anything is readable on the big stone by the church window :-\

Unfortunately just can't make out the lettering. Have tried scanning it at 6,000dpi and blowing up but the grain of the emulsion is the only thing that really shows up.

It looks very remote doesn't it, and not in very good repair. Odd porch at the front - looks a bit Jerry built.

Those twin bell towers are fairly distinctive aren't they clearly? Would they be unusual in Cumberland?

Ruskie, it does look remote. There are plenty of Cumbrian churches with two bells in the bellcote. I have an index of Cumbrian church towers, steeples, spires, bellcotes etc but this one does not fit anything extant today.

Good evening,

Found a list of Grade 1 listed churches in Cumberland. Quite a few with the twin bells like that, example; http://www.geog.port.ac.uk/webmap/thelakes/html/lgaz/lk11002.htm

But not ours but will carry on looking.

Does it say the company & address of who printed the post card as sometimes they used general stock photo's taken anywhere around the print companies area. A famous post card company used to be in Holmfirth Yorkshire.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
