In case this is new to anybody.

I had had an email to say that the GRO has amended its search facilities for births and deaths. Unfortunately, it doesn't include marriages, but might in the future

However, you can now search on mother's maiden names before 1911.

You need to register - http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
