Flamank/ Flamock
« on: Saturday 05 November 16 18:34 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone researching the FLAMANKS OF BOSCARNE come across alternative spellings for this name?
I have just unearthed a FLAMOCK and wondered if I should look out for any more?
I have (like us all no doubt) seen various spellings and possible transcription errors before, but this one has taken me all day to suss out.
TIA

Flammick, Flamick, Flamack - I have seen all sorts of variants whilst transcribing Cornish parish records. Guess that it is down to accents and lack of literacy.

That's great thanks - Are you an OPC?

I am. For St Enoder, Newlyn East and Perranzabuloe. But I transcribe for various things as well as the OPC project.

The third parish has a superb name!
I believe my "Flamanks" (of Boscarne) are based around Bodmin.
I have just started to use the OPC service, and it is bringing in some results for me.
I have a "tree" passed on to me via a newly discovered relative - quite a revelation, so I am keen to check it out stage by stage for myself.
So much info is cut and pasted that it's about as much use as an old stamp...
I'm not sure why, but I am quite delighted at having Cornish connections - I am Welsh by birth, so maybe its a Celt thing....
I am also connected to William Wall (Kenn Hangings)  - my 5th great grandfather....all this on my maternal side....pretty quiet on my father's so far...but you never know!
Thanks once again.

Perranzabuloe is the parish based around Perranporth on the North coast. Quite a large parish.

We have a Flamank memorial in St Enoder churchyard. I recall speaking with someone about the Flamanks some years ago - think they were in Oz. They had paid to have this memorial erected to their ancestors. I believe they were all from the St Enoder area - but it isn't that far to Bodmin from here to be honest, so there may be some connection.
I have, in St Enoder -
Elizabeth Jane died 1882 aged 24. Died shortly after daughter.
Kathleen died 1882 aged 3 months. Dau of Elizabeth Jane
Richard Henry died 1936 aged 86
All are on the same memorial as mentioned.

There are several others without headstones etc. Some from the outskirts of the parish, heading towards Bodmin.... Spellings are Flamank and Flammank!

Hi - only just picked this up regarding the memorial.
None of those names look familiar, but I am only looking at the direct line of grandparents at this point, and am now stuck in the late 1500's.....William Flamank and Mary Carminow his wife - found some info on one site, but, as ever, none of it is referenced.....back to the drawing board.....
