Think you mean Sophia Mansfield June qtr 1893.  He married as Edward Albert Giles

You may already have this, the first page infers he entered service under an assumed name though it could be just because his first names are interchanged

Yes Carole, you're right, I was replying in a hurry. The family story was that Sophia's name was Goodchild but I found this wasn't true and that's what I was thinking of when I replied, sorry!

Yes I investigated that National Archives record and it was because he'd swapped his names round.
As for the Woodstock Giles - thank you Lizdb, I'm sure I have researched this chap and ruled him out, but I shall check again. There seem to be so many Edward Alberts around, I need to find a record with his birth date - 19 December 1872.

Unfortunately, death certs prior to 1969 do not show full birthdates.  The age at death is just subtracted from the year of death to give an approximate birthyear - much the same as with the census entries.

Sophia did not remarry which may have provided a clue to her status.  She died in Rochford 1962 which you will already know.  Wonder if her death cert shows her as "wife of" or "widow of"
