Knoll Terrace, Clydach or Tonypandy
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 04:51 GMT (UK) »
I would be very grateful for some local input to my questions below, as I am living in Australia and cannot just pop in for a look around ::)

In the 1891 Census, I have found a number of my family members living at 6 Knoll Terrace in the hamlet of Clydach in the Rhondda in Ystradyfodwg, Glamorganshire. I am curious to try and locate this on the map however when I enter Knoll Terrace, I am always directed to Tonypandy which seems quite a long way from Clydach. I realise that boundaries change over time but am hoping someone can explain whether it is the same place or not.

I also understand that people probably lived in fairly cramped conditions back then, but it seems my great grandmother was living with her husband and their three children. However her parents were also living in the same house with their four young children as well as three boarders. I am really curious as to the size of the house and wonder whether there is a way to find information on this somewhere.

As always, all assistance and advice is very welcome.
Thanks in anticipation.

If you look at the first  page of the enumeration district there is a description of the ED in terms of roads with underneath in brackets (Tony Pandy)   There is a Clydach Vale to the west of Tonypandy on modern maps

Street names included in the description of the enumeration  district include Pandy Terrace, Court (Cwrt) Terrace which can be found on this 1870's map. http://maps.nls.uk/view/102342526#zoom=5&lat=7407&lon=9528&layers=BT

Knoll Terrace is shown in this late 1890's map http://maps.nls.uk/view/102183264#zoom=4&lat=2865&lon=1930&layers=BT

Thank you for the prompt response, Kay99. It is really interesting to see these old maps but I am not familiar with the area. Does this mean that the present day Knoll Terrace in Tonypandy is the street where my ancestors lived?
Thanks again.

I would think so.   The other street names seem to have changed and the properties on the Knoll Terrace have also changed

Hi, yes it is the same location, but the current houses where built around the 1960's I think.

It lies between Tonypandy (which is the main town) and Llywnypia. It is set on the side of a mountain.

Further up from it, still on a mountain, would be Blaenclydach and then further up Clydach Vale.

Some old photographs of area. Hit collections then Rhondda.

I have the local large cemetery index. Just for info.

If you give me names will have a look, when work allows, to see if your folk there

Thanks, Cas.
The family members that may have passed on while living at 6 Knoll Terrace are John William Mitchell (1865 - 1891) and his son Charles (1890 - 1891). John's wife Clara (my great grandmother) remarried in due course and moved away.

Clara's parents (George (1844 - 1896) & Sarah Ann (1845 - 1929) Brake) remained at 6 Knoll Terrace though with Clara's younger siblings (Elsie, Henrietta, William and Elizabeth Brake). I have not researched any of them yet though ;).

Thanks
