What happened to Eliza HOOPER?
« on: Friday 11 November 16 07:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi people

I've got a bit of a mystery with Eliza HOOPER (born in St Cleer around 1821 according to the 1851 and 1861 Censi).

She married Thomas Knight BICKELL on 4 Nov 1841 at St Cleer.  He died in 1857, and she is still in St Cleer as a Widow in 1861.  I can't find a death for her, so she may have remarried- Mar Q 1864 Liskeard to William SNELL looks likely.  But I can't find her in the 1871 Census as Eliza SNELL, nor a death for her in the period 1864-1871.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,
According to FamilySearch Eliza was baptised 02 Aug 1820 at St Cleer, daughter of William and Elizabeth. There is a transcribed MI on FindMyPast that gives a death of Eliza Bickell  on 23 Aug 1870 at St Cleer age 50.

Thanks Peter, I haven't got FindMyPast, so appreciate the help.

By MI do they mean Memorial Inscription?  Would there still be something to see at the St Cleer Church?

Thanks.  So one record says Eliza, and one says Elizabeth?  It sounds like the same event.

Hi,
Whether there is still something to see will depend on when the survey/transcription was undertaken. The OPC that Rosie linked to may know the answer.

Thanks people. It says Elizabeth on the link for OPC burials (and after half an hour of confusion I now know that you need to search for "Cleer, St" not "St Cleer") in those records! :P

I don't think it can be the woman I'm looking for.  She was definitely an Eliza at her wedding, and in the 1851 and 1861 censi.

EDIT: although I now notice that Elizabeth also had her residence as Tremar Coombe, as did Thomas Bickell, her previously deceased alleged husband.  Maybe somebody just got the name wrong?

Still worth making contact with the OPC. They may have local knowledge and evan have access to the actual register to check.
