There appear to be a number of Pike families in Bow. I've just picked a few at random albeit a little later than the early 1800's.

Bow baptisms:
Ann, d/o James Pike (Tanner) & Mary  1817
Mary, d/o James Pike (Tanner) & Mary 1820
Jane d/o Samuel Pike (Tanner) & Elizabeth 1817 (possible 1817 burial aged 2 months)
Jane d/o Samuel Pike (Tanner) & Elizabeth 1819 (possible burial 1832 aged 13)

also William Pike (Lab) & Rebecka;  John Pike (Exciseman) & Mary    and so on.

I'm sure you already know of these and others - quite a common name for a small community!

Thanks. I'm still not finding a John Pike b. Kingsteignton and Susanna b. Chagford in the census.  I think his parents might have been James Pike and Elizabeth Martin who married in Spreyton in 1794. Would Kingsteignton have been his birth place or the place that he was living at the time of his marriage?

Possibly just where he was living at the time of the marriage.  But who knows  :-\

Why do you say that John was BORN in Kingsteignton? The banns register for Kingsteington says he was a sojourner, so only a short stay resident. It does not say he was born there. There is a John b bow and Susannah b Chagford living in Bow in 1851, 1861 and 1871 - why can't these be your couple?

That's good news thanks. I thought it meant he was born there. Thanks very much for letting me know about him being there as a sojourner.  :)
