uncle robert

My uncle, Robert Robertson was born in West Derby in 1930's, I only saw him once when I was a child because he was in Rainhill , a mental institution for whatever reason for a while.
Could anyone tell me how to find any information about him?

Hi Jemaco

Because your uncle was born under 100 years ago, you'll likely have to pay for certificates rather than access them online.

If I was you, I'd gather all the information you (or other members of your family) have about Robert. Where and when born, where and when died, was he married etc. Then order certificates you don't have from the National Registers.

In relation to his time in Rainhill, the archives at Liverpool Library might be able to help you to find out what patient records (if any) still exist for the time he was there. Again, access to records can be a problem if the person is still alive or the stay was relatively recent. But the fact that you are a close family member may make things easier. Best to find out when he was there and then speak to the archivist responsible for those records.

Good luck. Hope you find something helpful.

Do you know if he is deceased or not? Do you know his mother's maiden name? This is to ensure we have the right birth index for him. West Derby was not a registration district in 1935 there was Liverpool North and Liverpool South covering the Liverpool area.

Hello Jemaco, welcome to RootsChat :)

Do you remember where and when you met your uncle; was he in Rainhill at that time?

Because your uncle was born under 100 years ago, you'll likely have to pay for certificates rather than access them online.

I believe that what Citizen Smith is saying is correct for Scottish birth, marriage, and death (BMD) certificates.  As Robert was born in England where the rules are different, you will not be able to view his birth certificate online but there is nothing to stop you ordering a copy for a few pounds (or do you already have it?).

If you're not sure how to do that, we will 'talk' you through it.  There appear to be two possible births recorded in 1935 and you can tell which one is correct by the mother's maiden name and/or Robert's middle name.

Hello Jemaco,

I have just edited the date of birth, as we think that you uncle may still be living.
