"From Whence Admitted"
« on: Thursday 17 November 16 01:52 GMT (UK) »
This is a Liverpool workhouse admission record for a person named Richards. This is in the column titled "From Whence Admitted." Most of the other entries have an address or a specific house name.

Could it be:

Mrs? Smith @ 1 Portland Road.

Only a suggestion.
I don't know anything about Liverpool

Welcome to Rootschat, KCB16.

There isn't a Portland Road in Liverpool but there is a Portland Street.

In the 1881 census James Smith & family are at number 1. Is that the right timeframe?

There used to be a Portland Road in Liverpool though.

Here's an account of a violent crime there in 1898. http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ive/

Not sure about the incident mentioned in that book, Mike

"In 1898 a gang of four, all 20 or under, were arrested for beating a man who refused to give them 'something to smoke' in Portland Road, Liverpool."

(Crime & Criminals of Victorian England, by Adrian Gray)

I can't find a contemporary press report of such an incident in 1898. There is no Portland Road in the Liverpool censuses as far as I can see (FindMyPast lists some "Portland Road " addresses but these all seem to be mistranscriptions of Scotland Road).

Thank you for the help.

What does the "e" above the 1 mean? I thought maybe this was an abreviation or something.

This record is from 1902.

And I can't decide between Portland Rd and Scotland Road. There is also a Portland Place in Liverpool.

And is the name Mrs. Smith? Jno Smith? Or is it something else?

Hi,

I see 'Jno or Mrs Smith, 1C Scotland Road.'

Hope this helps.

Kind regards
