William Dixon or Dickson circa 1775
« on: Saturday 19 November 16 07:17 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the father of William Dixon or Dickson circa 1775. He may have been born in the Shipton-Under-Wychwood / Ramsden  Oxfordshire area.
His marriage Bann's 26 Sept / 3 Oct / 10the Oct 1802 indicate a Jane Hixs (Hicks). Both were shown as "of Ramsden in this parish". Jane died in Jan 1814, and William later married  Martha Wright 2 Oct 1826 in Shipton-Under-Wychwood Oxfordshire
Thanking you in advance

Hi Fitz,
I'm not sure it helps but on the marriage entry in the PR (Shipton-Under-Wychwood) on 11th Oct 1802 the two witnesses were Elizabeth Collins and Mary Collins.

Peter
Allen, Brown, West - Berkshire
Caesar, Dicker, Lamden, West - Hampshire
Hicks, Martin, Masters - Kent, Middlesex
Hancox/Hancock/Hancocke - Warwickshire
Gardner - Devon
Traylen - Essex & Jersey

You say he married a Martha.

Are you aware of the William DIXON on the 1841 and 1851 censuses, c1776 Ramsden, in Shipton-Under-Wychwood on 1841 and Ramsden (Witney) in 1851, and buried in Shipton-Under-Wychwood 3 Feb 1856? He is married to a Mary (with children Emanuel, William and Caroline*).  If he isn't the same person as the William who married your Martha then any birth entry you find for c1776 in the Ramsden area would well be for him instead.

(* also, it appears, a daughter Sarah who married in 1840, Emanuel is a witness)

(Further edit- Marriage William DIXON of Ramsden to Mary WHEELER of Ramsden 27th Mar 1815, Shipton-Under-Wychwood - so he cannot be the same person who married Martha unless he did so bigamously. I note the marriage to Martha says he is a widower but the marriage to Mary doesn't specify.)

Hi again Fitz,

Doing a search (1775 ±5 yrs) in the area yields a couple of interesting results:
William Dickinson, baptised at Burford on 28 Dec 1773, son of Robert (about 3m from Shipton-Under-Wychwood)
William Dickason, baptised at Banbury, St Mary on 2 Sep 1772, son of Edward & Elizabeth (about 18m from Shipton-Under-Wychwood)

Worth following up both but the first is more likely.

Peter
Allen, Brown, West - Berkshire
Caesar, Dicker, Lamden, West - Hampshire
Hicks, Martin, Masters - Kent, Middlesex
Hancox/Hancock/Hancocke - Warwickshire
Gardner - Devon
Traylen - Essex & Jersey

Hello Ayashi and Peter
Thank you to both of you.

Hello Ayashi
I was aware of the Banbury link but that was not the William I am looking for. For sure I will follow up on the Burford information thank you. I think he died circa 1841 and the 1851 census show Martha as a widow.

Hello Peter
Yes I am aware of the 1841 / 1851 in Ramsden. As far as I can tell he did not marry a Mary.
Looks like he had 4 Children with Jane Hicks / Hixs between 1802 and 1813. and then 5/6 Children With Martha Wright.
