Taggarts of Cumbria
« on: Saturday 19 November 16 09:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm making a family tree of my UK ancestors and have come all the way to Mary Ann Taggart (b. 1854 in Workington) and her father Charles Taggart, a miner (b. ca 1829).

Does anybody on this forum know more about the Taggarts in Cumbria and how they descend from MacTaggarts? My English grandmother used to tell me about the MacTaggarts in Scotland, so I assume there might be a link there.

Thanks!

Hello & welcome
It's a bit of a leap to go from a MacTaggart family in Scotland to a Taggart family in Cumbria.
Are you having difficulty in going back further ?
Is this your Charles Taggart's marriage ?

John TAGGERT, Occp Husbandman, married Elizabeth HIND, 9 Nov 1818, St Michael, Workington
(Source FreeREG)

There are 24 Marriages on FreeREG 1732-1837.
So the name goes back a long way in Cumberland.
Spellings of the name are TAYGIRT/TAGGERT/TAGGART

Thank you all for your replies!

jim1:
Yes, I'm having difficulties in going further back from Charles Taggart. But exactly as you suggest, Charles Taggart married Jane Nelson:

Charles Taggart=Jane Nelson
16 Feb 1851:Workington, Cumberland
Father's Name:John Taggart
Spouse's Father's Name:James Nelson

But this is where my info ends, can not find anything further back from John Taggart or James Nelson.

Sandra: Thank you for additional information! Elizabeth Hinds was John Taggarts wife, I persume?

Radcliff: Little John must have been Mary Ann's brother, sad.

Trish: Ok, as jim1 also said, quite a leap obviously from Mac Taggarts of Scotland to Taggarts in Cumbria, maybe no connection at all? If as back as 1732 still in Cumbria..

Charles Taggart appears to have been the father of my GG granddad, James Taggart Nelson, it seems he was born out of wedlock, the marriage of Charles to Jane Nelson came after his birth, but the he was named on birth certificate,,and Taggart used as,a middle name. I will have a look at my records, but from what I remember I hit the same difficulties at John Taggart and Elizabeth Hind. James Taggart Nelson married Margaret, can't remember surname right now. They moved for work, over to Darlington, the down to Leeds, where they settled.

Welcome to Rootschat Cunberland1852,

I am not sure what you mean by this ?;
but from what I remember I hit the same difficulties at John Taggart and Elizabeth Hind.

The Tree that has John Taggarts Death as 1838 is incorrect.
The GRO Death Index has that John age 9.

This is likely him;
John Taggart
Gender:   Male
Age:   33
Birth Date: 1799
Death Place: Workington, Cumberland, England
Burial Date: 23 Aug 1832

Familysearch has a few possibles for John 1798/9

If you have all John/Elizabeths Childrens names it may be a case of narrowing down by naming patterns and checking Census for other John Taggarts who are still alive 1851 to find their dob/pob.

Trish :)

Not sure about this one Trish as there was a daughter Sarah b. C. 1835.
Doesn't follow that John was the father of course.
Sarah looks to be the Sarah Hinds Bapt. 1801 Workington, mother Ann but we'll never know for sure.
