SPAIN: Poulsofor/ Pulsiver / Pulsyfer etc.
« on: Monday 21 November 16 09:57 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone ever come across the surname Poulsofor/ Pulsiver / Pulsyfer etc. ??

I have a marriage of a Pedigon Poulsofor to Willyam Pope dated 1650 in the South Hams, Devon.

I had never come across the name Pedigon, but have discovered that it might, possibly, derive from Spanish..... see:
Neuman and Baretti's Dictionary of the Spanish and English Languages:
Pedigon, sm. (Coll.) Craver, an insatiable asker.   :-\

I have wondered if this Pulsevir (and all other possible spellings,) family might have been Huguenot and come into the UK from Holland or France, but now I wonder, might they have been from Spain?

Can anyone offer any thoughts or advice here please?

Hi

Having lived in Spain for over 30 years, I have never heard the name Pedigon or anything remotely like it.  And spelled just like that, it would be a male name, not female.
The surname doesn't sound Spanish either, but with so many possible spellings, it's difficult to be sure, not to mention possible 'interpretations' by the vicar of names he wasn't familiar with  ;)  There are various surnames such as Pellicer, Penalver, etc. which could easily have been mis-heard.

Just thinking here.... Could it be "Perdigon" and that being the first last name and Poulsofor be the brides second last name?

Bev...as a fellow "lifer".... any thoughts?

Thanks Erin.  :o I confess I am not entirely sure quite what you are saying here, but I think general opinion is that the actual entry in the register was mis-transcribed and that the name should read: Redigon Poulsofor.

Due to the deep Devon accent I conjecture this was how the Vicar heard the first name though the speaker intended RAdigon or more possibly RAdigund.

BUT sadly, that still does not give me any clue as to country of origin for the Poulsofor/ Pulsiver / Pulsyfer surname.

It's possible of course, but frankly I very much doubt that there is a Spanish connection here, having read mowsehowse's other thread.  But as said, there is always the possibility of a serious misinterpretation of the name by the Vicar/scribe.

Thanks Erin and Bev.

Funnily enough I have just been watching the Amanda Houlden WDYTYA, and she had FRENCH ancestors named Radigund..............

I wonder if I should re-post looking for a French connection.

Hi,

Just a thought. Could the name have been Bulsover or similar?
