Edward Dixey & Sarah Ann Eastwood. Married 4/11/1879
« on: Wednesday 23 November 16 16:23 GMT (UK) »
I've just started to research my Great, Great Grandfather Edward Dixey & his wife Sarah Ann Eastwood who married 4/11/1879. I'm trying to find their mum's maiden names. Is there anybody out there who can help?

All the very best.

Phil

The new GRO index lists maiden names on births prior to 1911 now  ;D  You will need to register with the site.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Their marriage gives fathers as Edward Dixey & James Eastwood have you located the families on census prior to 1879

Have you found the couple in 1881 censuses and later? ie after their marriage?  Then you will have a place of birth and approx. year of birth.
That coupled with the fathers name from the marriage cert should help you locate them in earlier censuses, and also to find their birth in the indexes, both as Rosie99 suggested.

If you get stuck anywhere in this process, do ask.

There's a birth for an Edward Dixey, 1852, Holbeach Registration District.
Is that your Edward?

This looks like Edward's death?

December qtr 1889
Croydon Registration District     vol 2a, page 165

Dixie, Edward     age 44

This puts his year of birth at around 1845?

The only birth I can find, that fits, is:
December qtr 1846
Greenwich Registration District     vol 5, page 266

Dixie, Edward

Hi Phil

Thank you for your PM.  We really need to find Edward with Sarah on a census so we can establish his  place of birth. His marriage gives him as of full age. Both he & his father are listed as Hawkers

Presumably this is his death
Deaths Dec qtr 1889
Edward Dixie   age 44
Croydon reg dist  2a   165

You said in your PM that you had found these births on the GRO index

1) Edward Dixie (not Dixey) born 1846 in The Greenwich Union. The mother's maiden surname was STANLEY.

2) Edward William Dixie (not Dixey) born 1842 in St. James, Clerkenwell. The mother's maiden surname was IRVEN.

I was hoping that perhaps we could find a marriage between these surnames or other births of siblings

Whilst not your couple, i think given the names and location, there's a fair chance this family is related to Edward. They are part of a large group living in tents on Mitcham Common

Philip Dixey    40 - hawker b Blackheath
Lydia Dixey    40 - b St ALbans
Sophia Dixey    20 - b Barnes
Ada Dixey    14 - b New Cross
Philip Dixey    6 - b Old Kent Road
Elizabeth Dixey    12 - b Battersea
Deliah Dixey     11 months - b Epsom

RG11, 826, 149, 37

Phillips Dixey married Lydia Smith in 1860 in Molesey. his father was Edward Dixey, a hawker. hers William Terrant Smith, basket maker
