Betsy Dawson - not married?
« on: Wednesday 23 November 16 21:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I am trying to find a birth for Joseph Dawson born around 1824, Hertfordshire. I have come across Betsy Dawson from Hertfordshire, who had a child Joseph Dawson in 1824, but also lists his father as Edward Ives. Was she single when he was born? However, there is another exact same record but Joseph's surname is changed to Ives. Can someone tell me why there are two records but with different surnames?

Hertfordshire baptisms are on FindMyPast - suggest you search for Joseph Ivor (mistranscription of Ives)  b Cheshunt in 1824.

Birth registration started at the end of 1837, so mainly what we find before then are baptisms (which have varying amount of information on them depending on the time period, the geographical area and the whims of various members of the church).

The baptism entry for Joseph confirms he is the "base born child" of Edward Ives late of Woodford [???x*] labourer and Betsy Dawson, Cheshunt Poor House, single woman. He is recorded as having been born on the 1st June and ch. 27th June. The reason for the two different surnames is that the entry doesn't record his surname, he is just "Joseph" so the transcriber has no way of knowing if he was given the surname Ives or the surname Dawson, so the transcription is listed under both.

(*I'm wondering if, with some imagination, this might be "Essex" but don't quote me on it)

Occp Gardner.
He married Rebecca LYING 13 January 1818   Saint Michaels, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire

I did notice this Burial;

Thank you so much! I will look at those records. So Edward Ives was married when Joseph was born (if it's him)?

Yes, it looks like Edward Ives was married if he was the Father of Joseph.

As its an unusual name I could not find any other Edward Ives.
If that is Elizabeths Burial maybe Edward Ives/Elizabeth Dawson both worked for the Sapte Family.
