Barbara Kay Crossmichael
« on: Wednesday 23 November 16 22:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello

My 4 x Grt Grandmother Barbara Kay was born in or around 1816 in Crossmichael according to census records.
I have not been able to locate her birth or parents etc.
She married John Fletcher.
Any help locating her birth and possible parentage etc would be greatly appreciated.
As a little side note she is also the Grt Grandmother of Sir Bernard Miles.

Hi
Have you  searched under McKie, or McKay :-\ I'm assuming that 'Kay' is the surname and not second Christian name ;)

familysearch.org has a Barbara McKie born 7 June 1815 Crossmichael. Parents William McKie and Mary Johnstone do either of these names feature in children names? The Scottish naming pattern can sometimes give clues.

Let us know how you get on

Hi

I have not tried those variants to be honest.
She only had 2 kids and they were named Jane and Isabella.

The search continues lol

Danny, did she die in Scotland post 1855? If so, her death cert should include her parents' names if known to the informant.

Can anybody spot the marriage between Barbara and John Fletcher c1840 according to other family members?
I assume that would mention a father at least.

Hi Monica

I believe she passed away in 1875.

This research has come from another elderly relative that has since passed away. The census records do however seem to fit in with the information given.

It would seem she also had a child named William and another named Mary.

Pre 1855, any entry to be found would be from the Old Parish Registers and more often than not, it will be no more than a single line on the register. At best it might include father's name for the bride. Down to the clerk really and how much info he chose to add.
