The Marriage of John Coward and Hannah Taylor
« on: Thursday 24 November 16 18:26 GMT (UK) »
This is a plea for help in finding the marriage of John Coward born c 1821 in Chelsea and Hannah Taylor born c 1837 in Soho. I am beginning to think they never did marry.  I have trawled the records  using various variations of their names on Ancestry and Past Times and I am now close to giving up. They appear together on the 1861 Census in St Luke, Middlesex (without children). There is approximately a ten year age difference between them. Their eldest son Walter Coward (my Gr/Grandfather) was born on the 13th December 1861 In Shoreditch. Five more children followed. But I have searched back and forwards from these dates for a marriage without success. If anyone can help I would be truly grateful.

In view of the age gap between John and Hannah, have you considered the possibility that John was already married when he met Hannah?  If he was then that may be why you can't find a marriage for them.

Have you found John on the 1841 and 1851 census records at all?

For some reason I can't find them on the 1861 census at all.

1861 RG 9; Piece 207 Folio 11 Page 27
ancestry has a transcribed age of 54 for John and a birth place of Cheshire but the entry came up because a correction has been submitted  Looking at the image I would have gone for age 54 as well. John is a master shoemaker

No worries Girl Guide but I still can't find John with any certainty in 1851/1841.

There is a Hannah Taylor born Soho in what appears to be The Workhouse in Edmonton in 1851?

I'm wondering if it was John that was already married?

This is making my head hurt :-\

Same here. I can find a couple of John Cowards around the same are but the occupations don't match. There is one with a wife transcribed as E Coward but he is a decorator. I am not too sure about his wife's initial being E either. HO107 Piece 1518 Folio 174 Page 26
There are others in Middlesex but not born there. ::)

Well I've found a John Coward in the 1841 census living in St. Luke Chelsea who may be a possibility.  Occupation is given as student!

Thanks for your help and advice. Your findings on the Census returns match mine starting with 1841 in St Luke, Chelsea. He disappears in 1851 and re-appears in 1861 as a married man with Hannah in Whitecross Street, near Shoreditch.

Both couples seem to have come from wealthy families. John's father was a starch manufacturer (later made bankrupt) and Hannah Coward nee Taylor' s father was an engraver. The 'Hannah' that was in the 'Workshouse' in Edmonton in 1851 has an age that doesn't fit but her birthplace does. John Coward totally disappears in 1851. It really is a headache!! But I'm not giving up.

As a Master Shoe Maker perhaps there are records that might pin him down (I hope!!!)

Many thanks for your help.
