The Sons of Mitcham's Travellers Killed in the Great War 1914-18

Contrary to what others might think, the husbands & sons of Mitcham's travelling people fought and died in the Great war 1914-18.  I don't think I've ever seen recognition of, or a tribute to, this group of individuals.

I think these names on the memorial were from the travelling community:

Frederick Scott - thought to be married to Naomi Mills, a daughter of Aaron and Flora Mills - she was born in Wilford Road Croydon  circa 1887

Edward Marney - b. 1898 Epsom area, son of Edward & Ellen Marney.

John James - b. 1895 , son of Arthur James and Ocean Draper(?), from Queen's Road Mitcham.

Leonard Dixie - b. 1896 in Mitcham, son of Edward & Ann Dixie, from Eastflelds Mitcham.

Walter Bowers - b. 1874 in Sussex, married to Maud Mary Punter, son of Roda   Bowers. Walter was an old solider who had served with the East Surreys between 1894-1906.

Frederick Matthews - b. 1898 Wandsworth, son of Fred and Scinney/Sunnie Matthews - his mother's name was I think Sinamenta Cooper.

Christopher Matthews - b. 1894 details as above.  Family from Seaton Road, Mitcham  (A third brother Henry was known to have been  in the war and survived)

Arthur Gardener - b. 1899, son of William and Louisa Gardener, he was a "golf caddie" before the war. 

John Gardener - b. 1892, details as above. He was a "golf caddie" too. 


I think  nightnurse51 is the person who could help with some of the these names, but
any information about these individuals and their families would help to get them the recognition they deserve.

Yes, that's the Matthews family I'm looking for, they were in Seaton Road by 1911. 
Fred and his wife were at 14 Seaton Road until around 1930.

1911 data Deleted as requested.

Information that confirms connections to known members of the Travelling community, any family stories, or background relevant to the Great War period.   I have most of the census and BMD data that is easliy found for these individuals but I'm not aware of the inter-family relationships or connections to travellers outside the Mitcham area, e.g. families in Wilford Road Croydon. 

I will contiune to search the forum for pervious posts that might mention these families.

What you cannot do is ask for 1911 census lookups and for other people to post 1911 onto your topics.

The site can be overwhelming as it's huge now compared to way back when, a victim of its own success, but there is usually lots of advice if you can find it.
