Rogers family of Buttington & Welshpool

John Hughes married Mary ROGERS, [bap 3 Apr 1808 in Buttington to John Rogers & his wife Elizabeth] in 1829 at All Saints, Buttington.
Banns: John Hughes, servant to Martin Williams, Hope in this Parish & Mary Rogers of Cletterwood in this Parish.
Marriage Cert: John Hughes of this Parish, bachelor & Mary Rogers of this Parish, spinster.
Mark of John Hughes but Mary Rogers signed her name.   Witnesses: Elizabeth Rogers [Mary's sister, also signed her own name] & Richard Beedle [future husband of Elizabeth] marked with a X.

John & Elizabeth Rogers had 4 children: William 1798, John 1801, Elizabeth 1805 & Mary 1808, all born Buttington.

They married 25th May 1797 in Welshpool.  She was Elizabeth Humphreys, spinster, aged 24 d/o Edward Humphreys, weaver & his wife Mary.  He was John Rogers, bachelor, aged 33, husbandman, s/o John Rogers, husbandman & Catherine.   Both signed with an X. Witnesses Richard Williams & Jacob Humphreys who I think was the Parish clerk as he'd signed other certs. They both signed their names.

So Elizabeth was 9 years younger than John.

All the above was found on FindMyPast. 
I assumed Elizabeth Humphreys was his wife as they had married the year before their 1st child William was born.

Now this is where I get stuck.    John was 33 when he got married so born in 1764 or thereabouts but I can't find one in Montgomeryshire.     It's the Rogers I'm researching so need to know who his parents were.   Any ideas please where to go from here??    Am I missing something??

Hello Alberbury,

So you don't think my Mary Rogers parents were John & Elizabeth [Humphreys]??

I concluded her mother was Elizabeth Humphreys because they m in 1797 in Welshpool & their 1st child William was b in 1798, the next year.  Mary herself was b in 1808 in Buttington, nr Welshpool & m John Hughes in 1829 in Buttington.    John Hughes was a servant in Hope, parish of Buttington when he m her.   She died in 1877 as Mary Hughes of Hope, parish of Buttington. [FindMyPast] So all this seemed to fit very nicely to me!!!

When they m John's parents were named as John & Catherine.    I cannot find a John R m a Catherine in Montgomeryshire.  John who m Elizabeth Humphreys was 33 when he married her, so he'd be b around 1764 so his parents John & Catherine could have been m up to 20 years before that, but I cannot find anyone that fits those criteria in Montgomeryshire.     Stuck again!!

Have you looked for the burial of John Rogers?
With a possible Memorial Inscription, with valuable information.
Or his Death Certificate.

Hi Alberbury,

I can't be sure of John Rogers death. I have the book of Montgomeryshire Records for Christ Church Welshpool but it's not in there.   Of course he could have been buried at St Mary's.

The marriage of John to Catherine Thomas in Welshpool in 1792 was no good as they were both 56 years old & both widowed.   Of course neither of them need have been from Montgomeryshire, they could have been from anywhere???

Have found the m of Joseph Lawton & Elizabeth Rogers on both FindMyPast & Family Search but cannot find them on a census in either Wales or England???    Don't know where he was born of course or where he was living prior to the marriage.

I seem to be quite stuck at the mo & do not yet want to spend any money on certs!
