For what it is worth, I would not trust Wikipedia on this. Owen and Eoin are the same name, and the same as Sean and John. Eugene is a completely different name.

Thanks I thought I better do some more checking. I googled it and found a thread on here in in 2009- it appears this is not the only instance of Owen and Eugene being used interchangably.

I think I will go with it being the same person. The children of this couple are on the census with Owen in 1901 and his widow in 1911, they are named as her children instead of step children but there are also civil registrations for two that match up the 3rd the page that comes up is Belmullet and it should be Enniscorthy! I must figure out how to tell them about error.
I hope that DNA match makes contact she may know more about the family. I do know of some of the families involved but didn't know we had a connection. One of my Aunts may be able to confirm it for me. She has dementia but can be very lucid talking about the past, she did a lot of research herself.
Anyway I will forge ahead with caution.

I would 100% stand over Owen and Eugene being one and the same

In my family circle and the wider west of Ireland area around Roscommon/Mayo, they have always been interchangeable.

Often civil registered as Owen and baptised as Eugene because a priest would ask for a christian or saints name whereas the civil registrar would ask what the child would be called.

There is a reference here to Hugh in this topic that I would not agree with; Hugh and Hubert are interchangeable in Roscommon at least; the Irish being Aodh - as in one of the Children of Lir. In fact I have cousins known as Hughie and Owen who are actually Hubert and Eugene!

Agree with myluck! about those names being interchangeable.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I thought I'd posted on this thread but it doesn't appear so!

This is the site that I've always used for name synonyms ~

http://www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=owen

An excellent site. It was originally set up for Scottish names but is now more universal.

I'd go with myluck!
OH's grandfather was Owen baptised Eugenius (many baptism registers in Latin in those days).

I wouldn't agree with Aodh or Oonagh as being the same name usually.

Agreed! My ggrandfather was constantly bouncing back and forth between those names. His daughter said Owen was Gaelic for Eugene.... Don't know if that's true.
