Weeley electoral register 1940s/50s
« on: Tuesday 29 November 16 18:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Just wondering which area Weeley, Essex, would come under for electoral registers in the 40s and 50s.

Also, as I don't live in the area, I would be grateful if anyone happens to be checking such registers, if they could see if a May Ann(e) Sophia Webb is listed?  I have no idea how big a job this is, as not sure how big the place was back then, and I don't have an address.  So if this is a big ask, then apologies and let me know!  I'm not sure if electoral registers for this area (whatever that is) are available.

I intend to try the 1939 register, although it is so badly digitised that I'm not hopeful.  I struggled to find people whose names and addresses I knew when I last looked at it.

Of course, she may have married, so I have to check that too.  I already have her in the census records for 1901 as Mary, but 1911 as May, which is more likely to be correct as it was written in by the householders themselves (ie her parents George and Harriett Webb nee Larman.  She was 17 in 1911 so born around 1894 in Marylebone, London.  I have her as a bridesmaid at a wedding in Jan 1920 so still single then, with her full name given in the marriage register as a witness, but haven't see this full name listed anywhere else.

Electoral Rolls are only searchable via an address - not a name

Weeley came under the Colchester Registration District for BMD registration from 1939

Hi Val

There's a Percy S Clarke and Mary A S Clarke in Margate in the 1939 register.

If this is your lady, born Paddington, later married in Brentford, 1939 possibly Kent, what is the connection to Weeley in Essex?

As Carole mentions, tryng to find someone without an address is almost a non-starter.

Although Weeley is currently in the Clacton Constituency, it wasn't 60 years ago, probably Harwich.

Thanks to CarolW and dawnsh for your help on this.

Looks like I'm back to square 1 on this as it seems Mary was Mary, not May.  I'm looking for a May in Weeley, which is an impossible search without surname or, as you have said CarolW, a hint of an address.

So thanks but will have to pursue another strand of the family story to see if I can find this person.

Another possibility is Beatrice May Merritt born 1904 (had a sister of same name born/died 1902, I think).  I will see if I can narrow down the address as some family vaguely remember visiting her, but all they said was she was 'out in the sticks' - perhaps Weeley was tiny then, or she wasn't in the village itself.

Thanks again - one step forward, two back!

Tell us all you know about "your" May, and we will have a think!
What is your connection to her - what do you know about her in order to have an interest in her?

Weeley isn't exactly a huge place - many might say it was "out in the sticks!"
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I'm puzzled by your reply.  The details you give in your opening post are a match to the marriage and death I found.   There is no birth for a May Ann Sophia Webb only a Mary

Why are you looking for May?
