Elusive marriage
« on: Thursday 01 December 16 19:07 GMT (UK) »
I've never been able to trace one particular marriage, I wonder if a fresh pair of eyes could help.

It's the marriage of George Butler and Eliza Hodgson, which could have taken place in either England or Ireland.

Their first known child was born c.1859 in Monaghan, Ireland. By 1861 they have settled in Liverpool, where they remain. Their ages vary on censuses; George was born c.1830 in Ireland (never stated more specifically than that) but Eliza was born c.1832 in either York or Leeds. York is stated on three censuses, Leeds on one.

Eliza's maiden name is known from baptism records of her children and from one birth certificate, where it appears as Hodson. In all sources she is Eliza, never Elizabeth.

Just to throw another location into the mix, an 18-year-old Eliza Hodgson is a housemaid in London on the 1851 census, to a family who had lived in York. I suspect this is her but can't prove it.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!
Mike

Just a thought, but York was a strong Quaker area. Have you checked Quaker records?
HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

This is interesting - Eliza's first two children were named Henry and Mary! I'll see if I can make any connection between this Eliza and my Eliza, besides the missing marriage.
