James Humm or William Humm ?
« on: Saturday 03 December 16 10:55 GMT (UK) »
I now have the marriage cert for James Humm (my great great grandfather) and Sarah Ann Spriggs(see previous posting) The writing is awful! I can see where it is sometimes recorded as Hummer! ...My query is in all the census I have manged to find back to 1841 james' father is recorded as WILLIAM  Hummer ..on the marriage certificate it is JAMES ,although he did not sign as a witness.
In 1841 Williiam is aged as 35 giving a birth year of 1806.Also his wife on the census is Elizabeth Hummer .Am I on the right track with the census'? All in the right area Ardleigh Essex.
..and to add to the confusion the birth records I can find for that time (1806) there is a james hum married to Ruth Reynolds.. !!  Pass me another tablet please..any help/advice greatly appreciated
Dave

Looks like you'd honed in on the wrong James.   As census shows, there were 2 born around the same time and the marriage certificate has confirmed that your man was the son of James Humm (and Rachael per 1841 census).

Familysearch shows the marriage of James Hum and Rachael Holding 1826 Ardleigh (only year given).

Just found a tree on Ancestry which shows James senior was bp.7/7/1805 Ardleigh, son of James Hum and Ruth Reynolds.

Also FreeReg shows date of James and Rachael's marriage was 28th August 1826 and that 'your' James Humm was bp.12/7/1829 Ardleigh, son of James and Rachael.
