Henry PATERSON b 1882 Jedburgh
« on: Friday 09 December 16 23:25 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather served in 5 regiments in WW1.   I have seen his medal card and have his medals War and Victory.   He was an "Engineer" and worked in the  post office.    He was married in 1916 in Stanley, Perthshire.    No details of enlistment or service have been found.    Why would he have been passed round to various regts??   Had he been too old to be in France?

RE - Spr 325694 - medals inscribed with this detail
Scots Guards - Pte 14682
KOSB - Pte 19256
Royal Scots - Pte 35876
KOSB - Pte 28883     All regiments taken from his medal card

You should be able to discover when he transferred regiment from when the numbers were issued. The lack of a Star medal shows he did not serve overseas until after 1st January 1916. It could be that he was wounded and transferred to a new unit after he recovered.

The Scots Guards are one of the few regiments to have retained a copy of soldiers service records. Their Archivist charges £30 per occasion..

If you have a problem with the numbers you can ask a question on the Great War Forum. One question per regiment to attract the experts.

To get it in the right order these are his Regt's. starting with the 1st.
Scots Guards 14682
KOSB 19256
Royal Scots 35876
KOSB 28883
RE 325694
Looking at Scots Guards 5 digit service no's. starting 146 throws up just 1: 14692 attested Nov. 1915.
Broadening the search to numbers starting 144-148 shows all men in this group attested Sept. - Dec. 1915.
So there's every reason to believe your man attested in the SG Nov. 1915.

If Scots Guards was his first regiment then any record held by them will only cover his time with them.
