marriage of Joseph Bradbury to Elizabeth Hill???
« on: Monday 12 December 16 23:05 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a marriage

Joseph Bradbury to possibly and Elizabeth Hill    I have them on the 1851 & 1861 Census in Mellor, Derbyshire with their son William who I believe is born 1845 in Hayfield....

I can't locate a marriage.... and I think William is the youngest after John, Sarah, Thomas, Joseph, Ann, George, and Alice who are all born before the BDM records....

I have William on 1871 census with his wife Ruth and mother Elizabeth widow and retired farmer

William and Ruth's (nee Hyde) daughter Alice Ann married Joseph Taylor who owned Tarden Farm Mellor....

Any help much appreciated....

son William consistently gives p.o.b. as Mellor Derbyshire

there is this baptism

William Bradbury
baptism 26Apr 1846 Mellor Derbys
Parents Joseph & Elizabeth

Mellor is in Hayfield reg district -so maybe that is why you think he was b Hayfield??

William's birth registration (June qtr 1845) gives his mother's maiden name of HILL.
(as per the new GRO Index search)

On the 1851 census, Elizabeth is aged 57 (born 1794).
I am guessing, therefore that she may have been married before?

A possible marriage?

Cheran,Bradbury is not a common name around Glossop !, i have Bradbury in that area, originally from Staffs. c1750, Birmingham, 1850, Derbyshire 1900, they worked on the Ladybower  dam living in Birchinlee    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birchinlee.
I have an earlier connection for the area Thomas Bradbury b.1818 Haunton Saffs  m.1837 Lichfield, Elizabeth Baxter, b. 1818 Chilcote Derbyshire. Just curious if anything rings a bell to you .   bodger

Joseph may be a widower, but not a widow?! ;D

It still remains that with Elizabeth being 57 in 1851, she is very likely to have married before.
And therefore her marriage to Joseph would not have been under her maiden name of Hill?

Attached baptism entry for William Bradbury - Joseph is a farmer.

1841 Census - HO107/185/12 folio 43 page 18

Joseph is a farmer, with Elizabeth and a number of children.  Address matches the baptism entry.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

That would make Elizabeth only 15-19 when eldest son John was born?!
Not impossible, but again they could have married later in life.

Remember that (adult) ages on the 1841 census were rounded down to a multiple of 5 years.
