Patrick Hanna
« on: Tuesday 13 December 16 21:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am looking for information about Patrick Hanna who was in an accident aboard SS Kittiwake in Collingwood Dock, Liverpool in August.  I have a newspaper cutting but no date attached.  He died in hospital in December.  I have looked at British Newspapers Online with no luck.  Any help appreciated.

The SS Kittiwake was built in 1906 and torpedoed in 1917.

Great source of info.  I don't see Patrick's name there, but perhaps he was a dockhand and not actually a crew member.

Many thanks for your replies.
Patrick Hanna, according to the newspaper, cutting was a winch-man on the steamer, Kittiwake, owned by the Dundalk and Newry Steam packet Company.  He was reported crushed between the ship and the quay at Collingwood Dock after catching his foot in a rope and being jerked overboard.  This happened on August 17 and he was taken to hospital, presumably Liverpool.  He had successful treatment but succumbed on 12 December after developing a temperature.  He was reported as being 55 years of age and believing the year of the accident to be 1915 puts his birth as 1860.  The family came from Newry but I cannot find a birth/baptism.  There was a coroner's report in Liverpool and if anyone can shed light on where I might find that I would be grateful.  I can find no death certificate issued in the UK.  I believe that he was taken back to Ireland for burial.

Hi,
There was a baptism of a Patrick Hanna in Kilkeel Roman Catholic church on 17 Oct 1858. The parents were Patrick Hanna and Sarah Dowds and the family resided in Greencastle, a townland
 between Newry and Kilkeel.

Could he have been brought home before he died, there is a death 1914 of Patrick Hanna 55 from a fractured femur, registered Belfast, by son Thomas, but he died 18 Feb and is down as a labourer.

He died 51 Lisburn Road as did quite a few others on the page so it may be a home or hospital.

Dundalk and Newry Steam Packet Co. did not buy the ship until 1919, and then taken over by the British & Irish Steam Packet Co. in 1926 and then broken up in 1928, so your Patrick's death must have occurred between 1919 and 1926.
