I saw that, Mabel, and I wondered if that marriage had broken up and Grace had moved in, but she and William weren't initially able to marry.

But I can't see a Lena or Elizabeth McKevitt in 1911, nor can I see any deaths or divorces for people of these names between 1904 - 1914   :-\
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

I am surmising that Arthur WILSON, the Sailmaker, is the same one that I have i.e. born in Shrewsbury in 1845 on the 1871 census as the one named on the census 1861/1881 as being born in Sunderland in 1845 as I guess that he told the census people Sunderland for convenience?
The main link other than his occupation as sailmaker, which may have been common in the North East but (Henrietta) Mary Ann, his mother, born in London 1821 on the census forms is perhaps rarer?

His father was also Arthur Wilson born 1811 in Bristol.

Indeed it appears that he was married to Mary Garr and then Ann Thompson.

This is surely the Arthur Wilson you should be following:

1901 - Liverpool

Arthur Wilson head  56  sailmaker  Durham, Sunderland
Ann Wilson  wife  53     Durham, Sunderland
Wm. Wilson  son  30     Durham
Arthur Wilson  son  17     Liverpool
Martha Wilson  dau.  16     Liverpool
Grace Wilson  dau.  14     Liverpool

Similar information (give or take a few children) is repeated on the 1891 and 1881 censuses.

Arthur Wilson is always a sailmaker, and always born in Durham, Sunderland.   As he is on the 1861 census mentioned earlier - living with his mother Mary Ann.

EDIT  Sorry, I have just seen your post above.  I didn't realise that the Arthur from Shrewsbury was the same one.  I'm just going to take a look at the 1871, as I missed it before

Have looked at 1871, and of course you're right.

As to your original question regarding travelling around the country.  They almost certainly travelled by train.   Just as common then as it it now.  Probably more common I suppose, as they didn't have cars.

Thanks to everyone on here who have helped me and I feel that I am "following" the right Arthur BATES so will enjoy going further back if possible on Arthur Snr and Henrietta Mary Ann.

Hope you all have a wonderful Xmas   :)

Hi Keyboard, do your records tell you the location where ARTHUR BATES WILSON was baptised please as that may help me ? Also isn't it odd that he was baptised 7 years after he was born?!
