Help finding Marriage of Sml Wm Davies & Dthy Phillips
« on: Wednesday 14 December 16 23:08 GMT (UK) »
I just applied for the maternity records for my maternal grandfather who was born in 1928. Does anyone know wat sort of information they might contain. I'm hoping to get the ages of his parents, does this sound like a reasonable expectation?

I've never heard of maternity records.  :-\

Just for interest, can you tell us where was he born, and where are the records available from?

Hi Rusky, he was born at grange mount maternity hospital in Birkenhead. To b fair, I'm not sure they r specifically called maternity records, I just asked for any records relating to his birth  :)

I had to email accesstoinformationoffice@nhs.net

You may not get anything if they impose a closed period of 100 years.

Is your grandfather still alive?

Can you find his birth here?
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

The birth certificate will give his parent's names.

With that information, you may be able to find his parent's marriage. Their marriage certificate will give ages (or if unlucky will just say "full age" which means 21 and over) plus it will give the names of their fathers which will enable you to find them in censuses.

They should also appear on the 1939 register.

He is now deceased, I was hoping it wouldn't be just his birth certificate, I already have that. The ages do both say full.

Just to give a bit of context, I've been stuck with my mothers fathers roots for ages, I've thoroughly researched every other part of my family tree, its just my grandfather Dennis Davies origins that remain a mystery.

I was hoping (possibly mistakenly) that given the route I went, the records might be ones held by grange mont itself, rather than a generic birth certificate.

The person who emailed me back (6 months after I first emailed them) wasn't clear abt what records they were, I should probably get them to elaborate a bit before they send them.

Thanks for the help so far everyone

If you have his birth certificate that must give his parents names, so as Ruskie said you should be able to find them on the 1939 register. Why don't you give us what you have -  names and dates etc and see if anyone here can help?

They won't have a copy of his birth certificate. I can't imagine they will have anything other than medical information, and possibly the mother's address and date of birth.

If you look up your grandfather on the 1939 Register, you can get his parents dates of birth from that, unless his father was in the services.

You can also get an idea of their years of birth if you look up your great grandparents deaths on the GRO index, this  shows their ages.
