Brick Wall
« on: Thursday 15 December 16 09:15 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the family of a friend.  She was adopted at a young age but the details I have for her are as follows (from adoption certificate)

Mother Cassie Sullivan born 23rd January 1915 (from 1939 register)

Father George H Drew
Marriage 2nd Q 1935 Hendon Maiden name of Cassie - Sullivan

I have been unable to find a suitable birth for Cassie which fits the above date (family rumour said she came from Wales)
Most perplexingly she states on the marriage certificate that her father's name is Henry Jones!!

With no relevant censii being available to me I am at a loss as to where to go now.
Cassie is known to have died in  Edinburgh in either the 80's or 90's but again I have been unable to find a death registration but suspect even if found it would offer little useful information.

Would you have any thoughts as to where I could go next? Unsurprisingly there are a number of Henry Jones in Wales!!

I should add that I have comprehensive information about George Drew and his ancestors

Scottish Death Certificates have a lot more information than their counterparts from England & Wales!

See here for ordering details:
https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/registration/how-to-order-an-official-extract-from-the-registers

The death is too recent to be available online via ScotlandsPeople.
Only deaths more than 50 years ago can be searched for that way.

There's a Catherine J Sullivan born Pontypridd Mar 1915 - if Cassie was a nickname for Catherine that might be her  :-\

Note mothers maiden name also Sullivan.

What year was your friend born?

If that was her birth and she was illegitimate she may well have made up a fathers name.

You can search for deaths on Scotlands People up to and including 2016
For those deaths less than 50 years ago, you have to order the certificate
Death, 2001, Edinburgh
Catherine Jane Drew
age 86
Ref: 735/ 599

Put in mother's maiden surname, Sullivan, and it's the only Drew one there.

That's hopeful - the J for Jane ties in with the birth found - fingers crossed it's the right lady  :)

Thanks for the replies so far. I had discarded the Catherine from Pontypridd because a). the 1939 register entry was definitely Jan 23rd and b). she consistently used Cassie for all her other entries - of course now her death registration belies that. My friend was born 1937..

Catherine J Sullivan born Pontypridd Mar 1915

The above birth was registered in the January/March 1915 quarter which would fit with a January 23rd 1915 birth.

In reland Cassie is often a nickname for Catherine and with the surname being Sullivan there was likely an Irish connection at an earlier date.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
