Hello, I found a relative of mine, Mary Hayes from Killaloe, Co. Clare, Ireland (born 1896), in the Convent of Mercy at 181 Anlaby Road, Hull in 1911 (aged only 15/16). She was the only member of her family to have left home. I'm trying to understand why she would have done this - was it to because she was singled out for better schooling than her siblings, was it because she was being schooled to be a Nun, or could it have been because she had fallen pregnant in the Ireland of the time? There are a lot of girls from Ireland in the school at the time, from near where she lived (Limerick, Tipperary) so maybe there was a link to the locality.
I think there was a workhouse too at 188 Anlaby Road, but I don't think this was a workhouse situation with Mary.
Any insights much appreciated!
